The New Prosperity Museum by Edward Averett is a moving tale about miracles and remembrances. You are introduced to Henry James George right from his birth. He is the namesake of the great novelist and displays a prodigious facility at reading at age three. His mother thinks he is special, but his jealous older sister, Anne, thinks otherwise, so she taught Henry to be discreet with his reading gift. Henry’s gift is amplified to miraculous heights when Encarnacion Obregon, a Washington-based healer, refers to him as a Skookumchuck. Henry is believed to be the chosen powerful force who can heal others, send people to other realms, and bring them back. However, this gift comes with a price. Part of his own life force is taken away for every person he heals. While Henry languishes, people around him become preoccupied with the war. Then, his best friend's life must be saved. Will he still have enough left to give, and how will he find a way to live his own life?
The New Prosperity Museum is an original story, intelligent and emotional in addressing the issues besetting existence. Edward Averett brilliantly creates a protagonist with a gift to heal through reading. I have read stories about characters who can manipulate reality through writing. Healing through reading is a first for me. Averett puts emphasis on the value of reading by giving this theme a magical twist. In a way, many of us seek refuge in reading as a means of escape. It is an affordable pleasure that many people overlook. This is a story that shapes the main protagonist in detail as you follow his development from babyhood to his adult years. There is a solid, humane element to the plot that will make you examine the human condition and see how mementos can shape our future. I highly recommend The New Prosperity Museum to anyone who loves emotionally and spiritually uplifting tales.
