The Night Garden by Sandra Tyler is a memoir that pays a touching homage to her mother. Tyler paints a heartfelt picture of the highs and lows she faced, taking care of her elderly mother while meeting the needs of her own family. The author painstakingly recalls the agonizing process of her mother’s physical and mental deterioration over several years. Each year, Tyler was forced to watch her mother evolve into someone who was a mere reflection of the vibrant, capable woman she once was. Her mother’s dementia continued to erode her sense of self. There were days when the author felt her best efforts were never substantial enough. Her life became consumed by constant upheavals and endless anxieties. Yet, the author was able to reclaim her sense of peace, self-worth, and identity through it all. Follow her captivating journey today.
The Night Garden is an intimate memoir, rich with emotion, charm, and heartbreak. Sandra Tyler poignantly relates how she navigated her way through the loss of her mother to dementia. Tyler's candor wholeheartedly shapes this beautiful book. Her vivid memories provide a clear layout of the prolonged dissolution of a cherished life. Her reflections are raw and profound, drawing readers in page by page. The author does a superb job of demonstrating the psychological and emotional concerns that arise when family members become caregivers and when children and parents reverse their roles. The Night Garden instills empathy, understanding, and humility in its readers. I highly recommend it to persons with friends and loved ones battling dementia. A riveting must-read.
