An impactful children’s story, The No-Phone Kid by Leonardo Lesage, includes invaluable lessons about money management, relationship building, and self-awareness. Tyler longs to have the latest phone like his friends. In a school where phones are more common than anything else, Tyler feels like he is missing out with his old, outdated phone. Tyler feels even more miserable as his friends continue to brag about their latest gadgets. Having had enough and wishing for once he could also talk about his phone, Tyler decides to do something about it. After emptying his piggy bank, he realizes he only has ten dollars. That evening, he spends time trying to come up with ways to earn enough to buy the latest phone. As he works toward his goal, he discovers important lessons along the way.
I loved that this story is written with the audience in mind and involves themes that children within Tyler’s age group will be able to learn from. Children will also be able to connect with him as he faces common struggles that they may encounter. The lessons are skillfully included and especially applicable in our modern world, which is characterized by continuous technological advancement. Children will learn skills about handling money and reserving time and resources for the friends in their lives. I loved Tyler’s growth as he learns what is most important to him, instead of just following everyone else around him. The No-Phone Kid by Leonardo Lesage is a practical and valuable work with helpful lessons for cultivating money management skills and building healthy relationships. Children will also learn how to identify and spend their resources on that which is most important to them.
