Callie’s wedding is perfectly planned and well-publicized, since she took every opportunity to talk about her big day. But in the final moments prior to walking down the aisle, those perfect plans begin to dissolve, one by one. Everything is ready. The photographer, the food, the bride…check, check, check. But Daniel is not where he is supposed to be. And that is bad since he is the groom. A groom who chose the maid of honor, and Callie’s best friend, over his betrothed. Being left at the altar was not included in Callie’s expectations for the big day. Not bad enough? In her retaliation, Callie licks her wounds with an uncharacteristically drunken one night stand that only magnifies her misery. When she is put on a one-month suspension at work, rather than the junior partner recommendation she anticipated, Callie is convinced to use her honeymoon tickets for a much needed get-away in an attempt to regain her previous success at work. The time away from Daniel would surely clear her head and set her back on the right track. Right?
The Power of Prayer by Lorana Hoopes is nothing like I initially expected. Hoopes’ characters are disturbingly realistic while facing some extremely intense issues of infidelity, promiscuous behavior, self-realization, and life-altering decisions. I am reminded of the “tough love” method of intervention used to alter disagreeable behavior. The Power of Prayer offers a vivid insight into spiritual existence by testing a woman’s faith and showing her a better way to live. Not your typical romance story, but a thought-provoking look at lessons in decision-making.
