When people vote to elect the President of the United States, they are voting for someone who will not only make decisions about how things are done in the US Government at home but also how the United States will function in the world. Voters want the US Presidents they elect to do a good job. Unfortunately, they make mistakes. Sometimes they do this because they don’t know any better. or simply for selfish reasons. This book focuses on one-term presidents, whom the voters rejected because of their errors. The book is narrated by a fictional Millard Fillmore. He says his two biggest mistakes were signing the Fugitive Slave Act, which allowed runaway slaves to be caught and returned to their masters, and briefly ending immigration to the United States. The Presidents Did What? by Wag Harrison, illustrated by C. Rod, details the mistakes and bad judgment of seven former one-term presidents.

History usually focuses on the good things that happened in the past. How good politicians made life better for the citizens who voted for them, or whom they ruled. The Presidents Did What? by Wag Harrison is unusual because it points out that we have survived bad presidents, who temporarily made life worse for the country. If your young readers are ready to learn that people make mistakes, even when they are president, this book’s light touch and apologetic tone will be just what they are looking for. I also recommend this book for school and public libraries. Honesty in history is even more important than honesty in politicians.
