In The Price of Deception by Rita Mary Boehm, Anita Johns was brutally murdered. Anita had a complicated past and was not always the best mother to Pepper. Police Chief Donnie Smith is called in to investigate the murder. To complicate matters further, Pepper suddenly disappears. Years earlier, Anita had mysteriously arrived in Jamestown with young Pepper, carrying neither identification nor a driver's license. Pepper believes her story began in Jamestown, until she is kidnapped and taken back to meet the Prophet. Haunted by a memory of painful slaps, constant fear, and her mother's anxiety, Pepper slowly uncovers the truth about her past. Donnie, who has grown to love Pepper as though she were his own daughter, teams up with the FBI. Donnie is determined to rescue Pepper before she is trapped forever in the life others have chosen for her.
The Price of Deception by Rita Mary Boehm is a fascinating read. I was hooked from start to end, and could not turn the pages fast enough. The pace is steady with several plots woven together. The chapters flowed into each other without detracting. The characters are realistic and relatable. I felt empathy with Pepper and the way she grew up. She grows into a strong woman throughout the story. Even when long-buried secrets were revealed, she remains herself. The writing was descriptive and engaging. It was easy to become part of Donnie’s search for Pepper and Anita’s killer. The book was expertly written, and the twists kept me engaged. I enjoyed reading the book, and the ending was much more than I could have hoped for.
