In "The Purple Contract" written by Robin Flett, Michael Hollis is a professional hit-man. In fact he is so professional that none of the ’spooks’ units worldwide have anything concrete on him. So, when two Scottish businessmen decide that Scotland’s quest for independence from England is about to be blocked by the possible enthroning of Prince Charles, they must act. A chain of events unfold that will intrigue the reader and keep them on the edge of their seats. The story contains so many elements that at first seem a swift departure, but the author cleverly blends them all together into a brilliant tale. The potted history of Glasgow and the Scottish countryside is useful to help set the scene for this modern day political scenario. The sub-plots in this story are fascinating and build to an exciting and stunning conclusion.

This is a cracker of a story and it has many twists and turns that will engage the reader for the entire book. The portrayal of the leading man is masterfully done and we are engaged by the well-developed character of Michael Hollis. The reader will enjoy the way in which the author Robin Flett plays upon our emotions with Michael’s tragic history. The plot is beautifully developed and the outcome is so cleverly devised that the reader may not see it coming. The character of Inspector Frank Wedderman of Special Branch is well crafted and his dogged determination to find the correct clues is admirable. The author, Robin Flett, has excelled with his debut novel and may well rank up there with the masters, Frederick Forsyth, Tom Clancy, and so on. A book recommended for all those who enjoy an exciting mystery/sleuth tale.
