So often we measure our self-worth against that of others. The purple croc in an orange sock is transformed every day when the magical clock strikes four. That’s when “a flamingo in a bright pink frock” appears at the end of the dock, and the purple croc in an orange sock dances with the flamingo. It made him feel special, but only until 5 o’clock, when the magic ended. Returning to his old self made the purple croc in an orange sock sad and insignificant until one day, a frog points out that “Just because you’re not in a frock/ doesn’t mean your knees can’t knock.” Read on in The Purple Croc In An Orange Sock by Sally Longlegs.

Sally Longlegs' picture book, The Purple Croc In An Orange Sock, is a heartwarming story about self-esteem and believing in yourself. Told in rhyming verse, with a definite tongue twist to the rhythm, this story is not only fun to read once you wrap your tongue around the twisters, it’s informative and educational. The repetitive phrases will have young readers chanting along with whoever reads the story, as they’ll quickly learn to recognize specific phrases, like “the purple croc in an orange sock.” In addition, young readers will have fun identifying the rhyming words, like croc, sock, and dock, and they’ll learn a little about telling the time. Most important is the moral of this story; being kind to yourself and others and accepting who you are and who others are, despite differences. We’re all different, which makes us all unique. This is a very clever and fun story, not to mention funny; it is beautifully illustrated.
