The Quiet Girl by Dolcie Truman Jaxon is a heart-wrenching memoir about overcoming negative emotions like depression, anger and hatred, and developing self worth, self esteem, spiritual happiness and healing. The author takes readers into her personal life from childhood where she is abused by Louis, her mother's lover, and how that leaves a permanent scar within her by affecting her self confidence and trust. The heartrending details of a child's abusive childhood and how that affects her future life are indeed touching. But what makes the book worth a read is how the author overcomes her abusive past and finds herself being healed and attaining spiritual happiness.

The story, written with a lot of strength, courage and determination, tells readers to treat their bodies like temples and not to let anyone make them feel uncomfortable in their own space. The book inspires the victims of abuse to speak up and not remain silent, fearing the abusers. How the author battles all her feelings of anger, shame, embarrassment, resentment and hatred are indeed painful to read. The book also describes how the author's traumatic past influences her present and it also shows while bringing up her children. The author's style of writing is simple, elegant and crisp. The scenes are detailed, pulling the reader into her life, thereby letting them connect well with the author's pain and trauma. It is a story of rediscovering one's own self and self healing.
