J. Rose Black brings us sporty romance fiction in The Real Ones: Chasing Victory. It’s Valentine’s Day, and Maddox McBride is participating in the Charity Flag Football Game. The weather fits his mood: stormy and gray. The reason for his mood could only be Briella Reddington, more commonly known as Ella. He should never have walked away, but he had his reasons. Her safety was his number one priority. Ella herself hesitantly joins the charity football game, knowing full well she might see Maddox. It has been ten months since that night, and yet she still can’t move on. Will this event, forcing them together, finally be their chance to be honest about their feelings? Or will their stubborn pride keep them apart? Do some of us even deserve a second chance?
Author J. Rose Black has created a contemporary romance saturated with very tangible tension between two people who love each other but are unsure of letting their walls down. With two realistic and relatable protagonists, this book does not disappoint. Writing in the first person from their separate perspectives gives the reader much-needed personal insight into both characters. The author uses a distinctive writing style in which the characters recall the events leading up to their present circumstances. I found this compelling, as it created the much-needed drama, enhancing the plot and pace of the story. The sensory descriptions are vivid, pulling the reader into the scenes. Due to the sexual content, The Real Ones is only suitable for adult readers. As part of the Chasing Victory series, I very much look forward to reading more from this author.
