A group of scientists performs an extraordinary experiment on a comatose young patient, resulting in unprecedented supernatural incidents in the bone-chilling short story, The Rebooted, by Ron Shaw. Eight-year-old Russell May is in a coma after being hit by a truck. His single mother and siblings are grief-stricken and uncertain about the decision to pull Russell off life support. With a negligible income, it seems as if the destitute family has little choice until they receive strange visitors on Halloween night. Two men at their door offer hope to the emotionally crushed family. Despite the unorthodox methods the men purport to use, Russell's loved ones gladly accept the proffered help. But what happens when they mess with the order of the universe? Does life trump death or does hell break loose?

The Rebooted by Ron Shaw is a dramatic short story with an eerie ambiance and an extraordinary plot. It is an unsettling tale regarding a group of scientists' disregard for heaven and hell and the results of their indifference. As the story unfolds and the suspense builds, the reader is held spellbound, knowing and waiting expectantly for something unnatural to happen. I loved the story line and could find only one drawback to the novelette. The dialogue areas were difficult to interpret; it was hard to discern who was speaking and to whom they were speaking. Other than that, the author has again written a fabulous story touching on the other realm. With that uneasy Hitchcockian feel of suspense and drama, this narrative will delight those who love suspense-laden tales accompanied by an underlying hint of the supernatural.
