The Rhymes of the Gray Beard Tree by Michael Verrett is a collection of rhyming poems that revolve around topics like animals, jobs, fairs, cherished things, adventure, fantasy, sports and other topics which handle the concept of tradition, values and the joys of youth in a fun way without sounding preachy. The poems are organized and categorized methodically and each one of them conveys a story. Though in rhyme, the book will definitely enthrall and entertain readers with its various stories and subtle messages that run through the poems.

The author reaches out to kids with the simple stories put down in rhyme. Every poem in each theme is engaging and will make kids observe and imagine more. The black and white sketches also complement the author's words beautifully. It's a good book for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries and it's also that perfect collection of rhymes which parents can read out to their kids. Every topic connects well with readers and the poet makes all the simple concepts interesting. The poetic style is fluid and the rhymes give readers an excellent sense of sound and rhythm.

The collection has a poem for everyone as it handles almost every topic that interests a child. It's difficult for me to pick a poem because every single poem is relatable and can be read again and again. Some of the poems read almost like they have been written by a child and all the topics are appropriate for children. The book is a great way to bring poetry into a child's life.
