Wow. That was the word I said to myself after finishing the short story, The Roots of the Antenna, by author David Podlipny. Following the main character, Ming, as he lives a primarily nocturnal lifestyle necessitated by his night shift job, Ming’s existence seems always at the edge of the rest of humanity. Always present but not, it’s almost as if he’s living a parallel existence to most. He deals with a horrible skin disorder, one in which he is incredibly itchy at all times. No amount of creams or medications have helped him and, as a last resort, he decides to try some advice from his coworker, to heal himself from within. But when things don’t go as planned, it’s only extreme measures that might help.

The writing of short stories, in my mind, is one of the most complex tasks of an author. To truly express a complete story, one that holds interest, intrigue enough so that the reader feels that they got the whole picture of what the author was trying to get across in just a few pages is really a feat. In The Roots of the Antenna, author David Podlipny is able to do just that. I was extremely impressed by his work, and found myself drawn into the story of Ming and the challenges of his life from page one.

Podlipny’s writing style is descriptive enough so that the reader can clearly visualize Ming’s surroundings, but spare enough that no words are wasted in doing so. The Roots of the Antenna would appeal to any reader who enjoys short fiction, but especially those looking for a read about a character with a unique set of challenges. This work was the first I’ve read by David Podlipny, and I’m excited to read more!
