The Shaft by Angus Silvie is a heart-pounding thriller. Lauren and Trey have moved into their new home in Ridley Manor. They live in a ground-floor apartment with a basement, a regular place at first sight until they find a locked trapdoor. Unlocking it, they discover a shaft, but they’ve unleashed something terrible. A homeless woman is dragged into the woods and killed, and that’s just the start. As the bodies pile up, the Home Office and police are at a dead end; they’ve never come up against anything like this before and are baffled about how to deal with it. Did Lauren and Trey let something out? And how do they put an end to it? Would one kill their neighbor to keep the other out of jail?
The Shaft by Angus Silvie is quite different in this genre, not suited to younger readers because there are some descriptions of death, but nothing you wouldn’t expect in a novel of this kind. I enjoyed it. It may be a thriller, but it’s fun, and rolls along at a good pace. It has plenty of suspense and twists and turns and offers ample action once the story is set. The characters are well-developed, each playing their part well and evolving into likable people for the most part. It starts as an unlikely monster thriller but turns into something you can wholly believe. This highly suspenseful and enjoyable story is recommended for anyone who fancies reading something just that little bit different.
