David R. Beshears’ The Shylmahn Trilogy is a thrilling and expertly crafted science fiction read. The three novels are set in Washington State. In Book One: The Shylmahn Migration, Earth is invaded by a highly intelligent and technologically advanced alien race from deep space. Within a day, Earth’s major cities, infrastructure, and military capability are destroyed, and billions of people are killed. The Shylmahn see themselves as pioneers on Earth, not as invaders. For humans, Earth is humanity’s home. Joseph Britton and his siblings begin a clandestine war against the invaders. Book Two: The Occupation, set after the initial invasion, covers a period of about thirty years. The story twists and turns multiple times as Joseph and his siblings continue their dangerous, hidden war against the Shylmahn. Most humans have been captured and live and work on Shylmahn reservations. In Eastern Washington state, Joseph builds Freetown, deep inside a mountain cavern. Book Three: Genesis is set about five years after the truce between humans and aliens. Joseph sets in motion a long-range plan to drive out the Shylmahn.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Shylmahn Trilogy for its multiple layers, subplots, exceptional characters, and complex worldbuilding. The story gained great depth through the good character development of both human and Shylmahn characters. Joseph Britton is the central character connecting all the key characters. The characters sprang to life through well-crafted prose, actions, challenges, and difficulties, set against the backdrop of mountains and forests. The intense drama of confrontations and relations between the different key characters, their thoughts and emotions, made the story fascinating and thought-provoking. I also liked the progressive character development through the trilogy, showing how the passage of time affects the relationship between the humans and Shylmahn. The key secondary characters that stood out were Joseph’s brother Jason and sister Carolyn for their courage and resilience. I liked the generational aspect of the younger family members, Michael and Jenny Britton. I highly recommend David R. Beshears’ gripping work to readers who enjoy stories of human and alien interactions, with remarkable and memorable characters.
