The Smidgeons lived in a lush green valley with a river running wide and a forest and mountains on the opposite side. Though the Smidgeons were not known to be big or strong, they used their brains and cooperation to get along. Everything was perfect but things could always change in the blink of an eye. High in the mountains lived the Glugs. The Glugs were selfish and they always used their brute strength to get what they wanted. They decided to head down to the valley where the Smidgeons lived, choosing to ignore the stories of what had happened before. The Smidgeons had not seen a Glug for a long time. Most of them believed the Glugs had gone forever, except the Smidgeon Valley Mayor who knew the Glugs was still there. Would peace prevail in the valley and would the Smidgeons and Glugs be able to live together peacefully?
The Smidgeons and the Glugs by J.E. Raven is a fairytale written in rhyming verse and will bring back memories of books by Dr. Seuss. The verses give the story a good pace and movement and they keep the tempo of the story till the very end. Children will love this book because of the story, the rhyming verses, and colorful illustrations. It will also teach them about being kind to others and treating others properly. The whimsical characters, the Glugs and the Smidgeons, are interesting and well portrayed. It is definitely a good book for parents, grandparents, and tutors to use for reading aloud sessions because of the good values and morals it conveys.
