The Space Colonel’s Woman: Dragonus Chronicles I by Jay Shaw portrays rescue pilot Julia Swift’s amazed delight when the hero of her favorite television drama materializes before her. She quickly discovers Mark Holden is a real person from an alternative reality and has amazing sex with him. After surviving a dramatic altercation with the pursuing Arcadians, Julia commits to returning with Mark to Phoenix City. Julia is surprised to discover she also has the X2 gene. Their romance continues with heat and strength, although it must survive the stress of both parties undertaking missions. When Mark is injured, Julia (also known as “Wings”) must help out by stepping into a training role. Their honeymoon is interrupted by danger. Can Hayden find Mark when he is abducted and declared dead?
The Space Colonel’s Woman by Jay Shaw is an action-oriented space romance. I enjoyed the story because it delivered a bit of everything, mixing a wedding and honeymoon with combat and adventure. I loved the moment when Colonel Holden presented Julia with an amazing engagement ring made from a strange metal and emitting a kaleidoscope pattern. I also liked the trip back to Earth which constituted Julia’s girls' night. It was interesting to read about Julia’s experiences as she adapted to living in a different dimension. I found her character easy to identify with and was pleased when she made friends and could continue her career. The book ended with a dramatic uncertainty but also contained accomplished plot points to satisfy the reader. The ending points to an extremely promising series.
