A squirrel named Oliver sets out to find the nuts he will need to get him through the following winter. As he moves through the forest, he realizes he has difficulty telling the acorns from other items of similar shape, size, and color as his favorite food. He squints his way around, hoping to find something to help him see so he can forage for the food he needs. He meets other forest animals with problems with sight and asks them to help him, most unusually. What is wrong with Oliver’s eyes? Is there a way the other animals can help him? How will he gather acorns if he can’t see them? How will he survive the winter if he can’t collect food? Find out in The Squinty Squirrel, written and illustrated by Summer Jones.

I love the story of The Squinty Squirrel by Summer Jones because it is entertaining and educational. Oliver and the forest animals are fun characters that kids can easily relate to, especially if they have eye problems. This story will help teach kids that glasses are designed specifically for one person and should never be shared with anyone. Jones has also provided beautiful illustrations that tell the story in pictures to match the text. I recommend it to anyone with young children, especially those with glasses or those facing the worry and anxiety that most kids usually feel before seeing the eye doctor.
