Author Biography

R.G. Hemm is the pen name of Henriette Montcalm and René Caya.

Henriette Montcalm is an author and lecturer. A series of significant events mark her childhood and are the harbinger of an early and growing interest in psychology and philosophy. Traditional fairy tales and ancient myths capture her imagination and provide some answers to her constant questioning as a child. It is only much later when she discovers the writings of the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung and is introduced to the meaning of universal symbols, that she is able to deepen her understanding of the life of the psyche and of its unconscious origins.

R.G. Caya has a doctoral degree in philosophy and is a professor of psychoanalysis at the college and university levels. From the beginning of his classical training, he immerses himself in the study of ancient languages, religious and art history. However, it is his passion for psychoanalytical research that wins out and determines his course of university study.

The Stones of Power is a children’s fantasy book by R.G. Hemm, the collective name for creators R. Caya and H. Montcalm. It is part of the Googaloos Adventure series, and is beautifully presented as a fully illustrated volume with prose sections of story on every page. The plot follows a traditional fantasy quest formula, but our heroes are Googaloos, a magical race born from dragons and lions, who must travel through many lands collecting the legendary Stones of Power, and ensuring that these artefacts don’t fall into the grasp of the evil demon Bothol. Cephalopods, dragons, fairies, ogres and all manner of otherworldly friends and foes are met along the way, and the central hero, King Bokar Bok, must do what’s right to ensure that his kingdom won’t be destroyed.

Reading the Stones of Power was like being inside a video game and I think that the graphic style of the story will really suit children of today as the illustrations are uniquely modern and quite unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The storyline itself is also well written and suited to its audience, containing all the classic elements of the fantasy genre that I would expect to see. I particularly enjoyed the seafaring section of the story with the giant sea monster Octo, and I felt that the dialogue and prose would be easy to read and enjoy for children of all ages, either alone or with their parents. Overall, R.G. Hemm triumphs with this book and I’d be excited to see what’s next for the Googaloos in their forthcoming adventures.
