"The Thriving Child," written by Erica Reid, is an excellent resource filled with information and tips for parents. The first section of the book focuses on helping children who suffer from allergies and asthma to thrive in all areas of life. This section includes tips for the child's diet, suggestions on how to limit the irritants for your child while cleaning your home, and how to help your child fit in and be successful at school. There is also a chapter on traveling with children which is a very useful resource for parents with children of all ages. The second section of the book focuses on helping your child thrive emotionally, including nurturing them and guiding their creativity and developing a giving spirit. There is even a chapter of recipes that children will love. I was excited to try several of these!
Reid shares the volume of information that she has learned through years of research and what she has learned from others as well as her own experiences with raising her two children. What is so great about this book is that it is so personal and practical. It is not a book filled with medical terminology and statistics based on research; instead it is filled with ideas, tips and facts based upon personal experience and working with professionals. Some people may shy away from these because their children do not suffer from allergies; however, I highly encourage any parent to read through this as it is filled with so much information that can be used with all children, even "healthy" children. The chapter on nurturing your child's creativity is filled with great ideas as is the chapter on discipline and responsibility. Parenting can be overwhelming at times and it is great to have Erica Reid's wisdom and experiences in this book as she is such an encourager and teacher!
