In Izzy B’s The Way Home, a core group of animals – a bear, squirrel, and rabbit - seek a new home of abundance. The land they currently inhabit can no longer support life. Their survival depends on reaching this new place. In the distance, they can view their new opportunity, but a great divide separates them from it. Working together, they try several methods to reach this new home, but are unable to get there. Out of the forest leaves emerges a Savior, whom the animals lovingly call the King. The King has a plan that might work. The execution of the plan and the toll it takes on this animal family is the essence of the story. The journey becomes more than a physical search for home. It becomes a lesson in courage, connection, and the goodness that can appear when someone chooses to help.

The Way Home by Izzy B is a subtle religious-themed story for young readers. It draws on well-known Bible allegories. The King symbolizes two personas. First, he represents Christ, the crucifixion, and His resurrection. Also, the King symbolizes the Good Shepherd who provides a way home to a lost flock. Ben Askew’s illustrations are impactful and feature expressive characters, soft textures, and warm colors. These all serve to mirror the animals’ feelings. The pacing and rhythm of the tale make it ideal for read-aloud sessions. The Way Home is a beautifully crafted picture book that parents and other adults in a child’s life will appreciate for its emotional depth and its ability to spark conversations. Bravo to Izzy B and Ben Askew for creating a story that will become beloved in many households.
