In "The Weight of Small Things" Sherri Emmons introduces us to two friends who appear as opposite as people can be. And yet, they work together and appear bound to one another for life. Corrie has been seemingly happily married for several years while her friend Bryn is a bohemian woman who goes in and out of a long-term relationship, trying to decide what she wants out of life. Corrie desperately wants a baby while Bryn couldn't care less about parental responsibility. When Bryn finds herself pregnant, she must weigh her options and try to begin to find herself along the way. Corrie also struggles with her identity while exploring feelings for a first love and, in the end, her decisions are every bit as heavy as those of her dear friend Bryn.
The issues weighed in this story are far from small and yet, the reader almost seems to know way too early on how things will turn out. The two women go back and forth in their feelings and behaviors toward the men in their lives and many clues are left for the reader along the way. The characters lack a bit of depth, and yet, they are quite loveable and human women. Their support of one another is heart-warming. The fact that it takes them ions to grow up is only slightly irritating. Overall, I enjoyed the book and I found myself cheering for responsible decision-making to the very last page of the book!
