The Wishing Coin by Antara Man is a marvelously written story about Julia Preston, an aspiring television reporter with visions of hosting her network’s top rated show called “The Screw.” She loses out to a younger star. To make matters worse, it’s her rival Jennifer Bailey, who has also acquired Julia’s ex-boyfriend. Frustrated, Julia encounters a street merchant selling magic wish coins. Some for love, some for work, but Julia wants one that will grant all of her wishes. The merchant sells her what she wants for $500, with the warning to never touch the coin with her right hand. Julia’s career suddenly begins to take off. As she uses her coin more and more, her friends begin to notice a change.
Antara Man does a marvelous job of developing the story with believable characters in the big city. There is even mention of some kinkiness. This is not your typical fairy tale. Antara’s writing pulled me in and never let me go. This piece is well written with an honest feel of how some fans treat their favorite local celebrities, while others might want to just use them for their own ticket to stardom. The story takes on its own persona once Julia realizes that she has accidentally touched the coin with her right hand. The events that ensue are smartly written and powerful. The moral of The Wishing Coin becomes evident by the end of the book. I can truly say that I loved this story. Brava, Antara!
