The Year of the Dark Spring is a work of fiction in the dark fantasy, pseudo-historical fiction, and adventure anthology subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Lewis A. D'Ambra. In this immersive and interesting primer of epic fantasy proportions, we are introduced to a world where an extinction-level event called the Dusk has decimated the planet, leaving the people of Kolgennon to reshape their lives and adjust over the last several centuries. But when a red light appears in the sky after so much darkness, nine different stories offer us perspectives on how life may yet have some light in it for these people as they begin to hope, fear, and wonder anew.
Author Lewis A. D'Ambra is a highly accomplished worldbuilder and a truly atmospheric force in the fantasy world, and that’s what really leaps out at you from the moment you open this fantastic collection. The world of Kolgennon and the concept of the Dusk itself are at the forefront of this anthology, encouraging us to understand the conditions under which the survivors have learned to live and make some sense of their dark existence. Seeing the different perspectives that each tale offers adds a new layer to the overall psychological and emotional tapestry, slowly building to a truly impressive piece of epic dark fantasy that feels satisfying and complete despite its ominous impression. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend The Year of the Dark Spring to fantasy fans everywhere as a fantastic introduction to a promising author who will no doubt become an instant favorite.
