This Is Us! Growing Up With Humour by Sheila Deitch and Corinne Deitch will appeal to memoir and humor fans. In the introduction, Sheila explains why she always wanted a big family and what this book means to her and her loved ones. The authors share memories about the life of Sheila, her husband, Gerry, and their four children, Leonard, Martin, Raymond, and Corinne, in Salford, Great Britain, in the 1960s, their trip to Israel in the summer of 1973, and the ensuing emigration to this country. The book has funny vignettes about the young mother, Sheila, struggling to discipline her "difficult" firstborn, Leonard; the family adventures during camping trips; eighteen-year-old Leonard causing panic in Be’er Sheva; Corinne's business endeavors, and her hard work as a primary school teacher, and many more.
In This Is Us! Growing Up With Humour, Sheila Deitch and Corinne Deitch revive their family history compellingly and humorously. I appreciate that the book also has educational value. Sheila speaks about the types of baby temperaments at the beginning of the book and the kinds of humor, concluding the narration. These brief reviews of the scientific theories turn the memoir into engaging research. The meticulous job the authors did in exploring their family roots and opening up about the losses and past traumas makes the memoir uplifting and moving. Those interested in the history of modern Israel and cherishing its vibrant ambiance will enjoy this book. Gerry Deitch's whimsical cartoon illustrations and the photos of the Deitchs, their friends, and their pets add visual depth to this riveting account.
