If you love time-travel mysteries, grab a copy of Anne Kathryn Hawkinson's Thornberry Manor: The Emerald. Things haven't been going too well for Paisley Venne. At thirty-one years of age, she was looking forward to getting married when she discovered her fiancé's affair with another woman. So when her mother, Molly, receives a letter disclosing she has inherited Thornberry Manor from a distant recently deceased relative in Hertfordshire, Paisley takes it upon herself to restore the manor to its former glory. After finding an old emerald necklace in the house, Paisley puts it on and soon finds herself time-traveling to 1829, where she meets her ancestors. After her return to the present, Paisley falls in love with a kind-hearted man named Finlay and researches her ancestors. Meanwhile, she must find a new stone for the necklace.
Anne Kathryn Hawkinson has infused a healthy dose of fantastical elements, romance, and humor into this captivating time-travel adventure. Thornberry Manor is full of mystery, reveals, and surprises. The plot features unexpected twists and turns that make you want to know more and discover how the mystery will be resolved. Additionally, Hawkinson's character work is brilliant. The relationship dynamics are so interesting, primarily due to the entertaining conversations between the different characters. The dialogue is light-hearted and laced with humor. I especially enjoyed the interactions featuring Paisley, Molly, and Finlay. The ending leaves the mystery of the necklace a bit ambiguous, but I felt it suited the story's tone. Lastly, the narrative is well-paced, which makes the book a pleasure to read. Fans of romance and time-travel adventures will have a blast with this novel.
