Though My Heart is Torn by Joanne Bischof is the second in the Cadence of Grace series. It takes off when Lonnie and Gideon are happily married and with their first child, a son. The happiness is short-lived when Gideon's first love, Cassie, claims their marriage was never annulled and there was no divorce, making Gideon a man with two wives. He loves Lonnie and his son and cannot even fathom returning to Cassie, a woman he feels is shallow and immature. But, return he must and the outcome of the judge's decision about the first marriage then forms the basis of the plot for this book.
Although I found the character of Gideon to be initially immature and somewhat annoying, he grew throughout the book and I attribute his movement to the excellent characterization of author Bischof. The same was true for the character of Cassie. Lonnie was steadfast through her deep emotional pain and she presented as the strongest of the characters. Backed by the love and support of the Bennett family, she came through as the true heroine that she was. The introduction of Toby as a potential love interest was intriguing and it sets the stage for the third book of the series.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book for the simple elegance of its characters. It is a book in which characters are faced with life-altering decisions and they proceed with dignity of purpose and correctness of values. This emotionally-charged book will leave you wondering about your own life decisions.
