Titan by Michael Van Cleve is a post holocaust sci-fi story about a family in the 23rd century where reptiles are Jurassic sized. A place where mutations, death and disease are everywhere. The story begins with Troy Hawking helping Paris with the birth of their new son, Brutus. Their other son, Christian, loves stories about giants and dragons, but Troy is teaching him practical knowledge of things like fusion and astrophysics. Troy is a brilliant scientist who has invented a robot, and is hoping it gains free thinking awareness. Paris is a fearless warrior with the skills of a seasoned mercenary, who leaves on horseback to travel to the city of Aegmos. Paris and Troy have a plan with hopes that her family will be given sanctuary in the last city on earth; a city that is protected by a great wall, with a strictly enforced anti-crime directive, where citizens are allowed just one violation.
Michael Van Cleve tells the tale with sense of a detailed police log. He describes everything as if it were entered into a logged journal, including dialog. His characters are as humane as one could expect them to be from growing up in a cold and hostile world. Titan is a short novel that has the foresight of some of the possibilities that can happen to the last of humanity after a nuclear war. His language use is detailed, descriptive, powerful, and disturbingly real. As a reader, you can sympathize with the heroes and the desperate plight of the future safety of their children. Titan is a thought provoking piece of work that will raise your awareness of our possible future.
