In Nick West’s Treasure River, Federal Game Warden Charlie Palmer investigates reports of armed trespassers inside Florida’s Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge after hurricane damage exposes the wreck of the Spanish galleon Santa Isabella along the Gulf Coast. The discovery draws archaeologists, federal agents, organized crime figures, and foreign operatives toward a hidden cache of treasure believed buried inland centuries earlier. Charlie soon learns the operation is tied to Antonio DePalma, a disgraced archaeology professor determined to recover the treasure that destroyed his career and damaged his relationship with his daughter Miranda, Charlie’s wife. As armed crews move the treasure through remote swamps, coastal waterways, Cuban harbors, and the Florida Keys, Charlie is caught in a widening conflict involving international smuggling operations, covert military activity, and a deadly pursuit across the Gulf of Mexico centered on a jeweled Spanish crucifix and a lost fortune.

Nick West’s Treasure River is a fantastic crime thriller, with scenes that are terrifying and unpredictable: A helicopter assault above Fowler’s Bluff has panic spreading faster than the gunfire, and a cigarette boat attack leans into something truly horrific. Charlie is the perfect lead because he is totally imperfect. He's unpolished and has zero interest in trying to impress anyone. This is a man who already knows the cost of violence. I like the ancillary character, Carol Johnson. She shows vulnerability and grit during Hurricane Vicky. The visual settings texturize a worn-out Gulf Coast atmosphere. Mooney Harbor is hidden from the modern world through mangrove channels packed with concealed boats and armed smugglers. Storm-damaged Cojímar feels even harsher with its flooded docks, exhausted survivors, and hunted fugitives. Nobody is going to be getting out of this story clean. Readers who like treasure hunts and survival crime fiction with leads you want to root for will enjoy this book.
