Trust on Trial by G. S. Gerry is an enormously important and timely work that dares to ask vital questions without wavering even one iota from its central message. As its title implies, Trust, in the form of a careworn and sometimes bedraggled accused man, is indeed on trial. The fate of Trust is hanging in the balance, but on a larger scale, so is the fate of humanity. The crux of one side of the argument is whether or not Trust is a betrayer and thus unworthy of our faith; on the other side, whether or not we as a people have been disappointed in Trust because we have chosen to place our trust in those who are unworthy. Both the prosecution and the defense present compelling cases, leaving the jury to decide the future of Trust. The lawyers’ carefully documented references range from biblical, philosophical, and theological to true crime and recent history.

In a brilliant twist, Trust on Trial ends with alternate chapters – one designating a conviction and the other revealing a verdict of not guilty – and instructions to read whichever one of the two aligns more closely with the reader’s opinion. Through this unique device, readers become one with the jury, examining their convictions to determine where they stand on the nature of Trust and the risks inherent in choosing to place their trust unwisely. Trust on Trial by G. S. Gerry has all the dynamic drama of a high-powered, high-stakes courtroom proceeding, inhabited by clearly drawn characters representing cross-sections of our divided society and punctuated with truths so irrefutable that these will linger long after several readings.
