Ukulele ABC: Strumming with Awesome Animals by Susan Montgomery is a joyful alphabet adventure that blends rhythm and animals, tailor-made for young readers and beginning musicians alike. Each page introduces a couple of letters, each paired with an animal with a ukulele of their own. A is for Aloha with a bunny, B is for bright with a bumble bee, C is for color with a zebra, and so on until Z, which is for zoom with an owl. Readers are also encouraged to strum one beat for each letter. With fun facts like some ukuleles are small and some are big, this book is entertaining and informative. At the end, there’s also a short, simple ukulele song children can practice with their teachers or family. By combining the alphabet, steady beats, and cheerful critter friends, it offers a playful way to explore both melody and language from A to Z.
I found Ukulele ABC by Susan Montgomery an absolute delight. I haven’t come across many books for kids about ukuleles, so it was a real treat to find this one. The artwork, also by Montgomery, uses a vibrant blend of drawing and paint, so each page pops with vivid colors and plenty of details, which are sure to keep kids engaged and eager to spot what’s new in every scene. My favorite was the “U is for Ukulele” spread with the magical, dreamy deer strumming along—it stood out for its sense of wonder and creativity. As an educator, I appreciated the information on the ukulele and the song at the end. It would be great for sparking discussions about both music and animals, or for inspiring kids to create their own simple songs and drawings. Regular classroom teachers might extend the story by letting students invent alphabetical tunes. In music class, they could try out rhythm instruments or compare their sounds, carrying the book’s spirit of curiosity into hands-on, creative play.
