Inspired by his father's legacy as an academic achiever, the author diligently worked and devoted himself until he succeeded in his chosen field. His rewards included a thriving career as a renowned investment banker. At the peak of his success, with wealth and luxury within his grasp, he astonished everyone by walking away from all his accomplishments. Instead, he chose to leave his homeland for the United States to take a position as a math teacher. In this engaging memoir, the author recounts how his passion for mathematics led him on a challenging transformational journey, taking him from the boardroom to the classroom and turning him into a molder of future minds in Unbalanced by Yellow Heights.

Unbalanced: Memoir of an Immigrant Math Teacher offers an intriguing insight into America's imperfect education system. Yellow Heights holds nothing back, detailing his early years and helping readers understand his love for numbers. He highlights the impact of his choices on his family, particularly his sons, and mentions individuals who served as guiding lights during his early years in the teaching profession. The author references documented events to illustrate the challenges teachers face when trying to educate the leaders of tomorrow, notably the burnout experienced by one of his colleagues. While I may disagree with his views on encouraging students to participate in math using financial incentives, as he did, I must admit that the end justified the means. What stands out is the balanced portrayal of his successes, reflecting his determination to uphold high standards alongside perceived failures. Isaac's predicament illustrates that no matter how hard one tries, there will always be those who slip through the cracks. Unbalanced is a must-read for all parents and teachers.
