In Until I Met Jake, Kimberly J. Coleman narrates the story of a woman named Christina. She finds herself trapped in an eerily empty, colorless world when she meets Jake, an eight-year-old boy. Without his parents to guide him, Jake is frightened, looking up to Christina for support. To keep him engaged, Christina shares her life story in detail. Jake’s innocent yet poignant questions cast a new light on her life, making her rethink her emotions and actions. Gradually, Christina starts to feel an unprecedented affection toward the lonely boy and vows to protect him. But to do so, they must wake up from the state of limbo surrounding them. With time running out, will Christina be able to save both of them?
Kimberly J. Coleman’s book was a simple yet thought-provoking read. Christina, hardened by grief and misfortune, starts opening up to Jake.
