Because Vitamin D has been getting so much attention lately and I have met more and more women who are taking Vitamin D supplements, I chose this book in order to learn more on the subject. Moreover, last year I was diagnosed with melanoma and I have to stay out of the sun, so I need to figure out how to still get my required daily dose of Vitamin D other than from the sunshine.
The book starts out with the Vitamin D basics such as what it does for the body, food sources of Vitamin D, and a table of risk factors for developing Vitamin D deficiency. I respectfully disagree with Dr. Rona’s assertion that there is no plausible evidence that melanoma has anything to do with sun damage. I learned something in the chapter about Vitamin D supplements, as that is something that I had wanted to look into. Based on what the author wrote, I might consider mega dosing. What was surprising was the chapter dealing with diseases prevented and treated by Vitamin D because the list was so large. Who knew that Vitamin D was so prolific? While I enjoyed that section, it appeared to go deep into some pretty specific diseases and unless you have one of those, you are liable to gloss over a large part of it.
Dr. Rona does address every question a person would want to ask about Vitamin D fairly succinctly in this book. But at times he seems almost defensive about people who do not believe what he has to say about Vitamin D.
