Life is so much more than caring for oneself: it’s really about caring for others. In Brandy Clark’s Vivian’s Perfectly Imperfect Picnic, young Vivian enjoys a day at the park with her Bubba. She rides the swings, enjoys a picnic, and walks around with Bubba. But that’s not all: she also watches her Bubba help someone whose bike tire went flat; he picks up litter and puts it in the nearby trash can where it belongs, and he shares their snack with a homeless man. When Vivian asks Bubba why he cares so much for others, she learns it’s all about humility and kindness. That’s when Vivian decides she’ll follow Bubba’s example.
Brandy Clark’s picture book, Vivian’s Perfectly Imperfect Picnic, is a sweet, touching story that will warm the hearts of readers both young and old. Told in simple language, this is easy for young readers to follow along, and it’ll help improve their reading skills. The illustrations by Jade Fang are lovely: bright, bold, and colorful, and they tell a story all of their own. The plot follows Vivian on her exciting outing with her Bubba as she learns to care for others and the world around her. This is a beautiful story to help young readers learn why it’s important to show kindness. As Vivian learns, so too will young readers, that one kind act at a time can make the world a better place and make the person being kind feel good about themselves. We can all learn, like Vivian, by setting a good example.
