Are you in a hurry to grow up? Do you want to be able to do things that grownups can do, like go to the movies on a school night? Or swim in the deep end of the pool even if you’re not tall enough? As the lifeguard at the community pool says, “A rule is a rule.” We may not like the rules set out for us to follow, but these rules are in place for a reason. Wait Until I Grow Up! by Celeste Parsons reminds us that there are some good things about being a child. For one thing, you get to do your favorite things, like Mandy’s ballet. And you get to eat your favorite foods, like Mandy’s spaghetti.

Celeste Parsons’s picture book, Wait Until I Grow Up!, is a simple story about childhood and the childish desire to grow up quickly. There is engaging dialogue between Mandy and her mother, and a lengthy description of Mandy’s thought patterns as she dreams of all the things she can do when she grows up. Having to wait is making Mandy angry, but this turns around at the end when she realizes that there are some good things about childhood. The illustrations are simple but colorful, and certainly help carry the story along. The message in this story is clear: be patient. The lifeguard’s words are right about rules and the need to accept that when we’re children, there are some restrictions. Everything works out in the end and Mandy returns to her happy, cheerful self. A beautiful story.
