Warwick’s Mermaid by Ellie Gray is about a survivor named Chloe MacGregor. Why is she a survivor? She’s rebuilding her life after suffering from an abusive and toxic relationship. Chloe is finally free from the physical assaults of her ex as well as his verbal abuse. She presently loves her new life, her little cottage, the beach, and her dog, Jasper. Still, the memories haunt her and she has to remind herself she’s worthy and to dismiss the lies of her ex. Chloe is not only trying to heal from her past wounds, but she’s also dealing with her overly critical mother. Chloe’s own mother has programmed her to believe that she’s never going to find true love. It’ll never happen and it’s a waste of time for someone like her. She might as well give up on the notion. However, Chloe takes a chance when she meets Luke Warwick. Surprisingly, he’s her new boss. Is she brave enough to love him? Is she willing to trust him and leave her past behind or will she self-sabotage? Then, again, is Luke willing to love Chloe beyond his own insecurities? She wasn't part of his life plan either.
Ellie Gray has delivered a sweet and wonderful story in Warwick’s Mermaid. From the very beginning, I was taken with Chloe’s character. She represents so many women who have been abused, whether physically or verbally, who are trying to fight for a better life. Again, Chloe’s a survivor. Her persistence is encouraging and, despite her many roadblocks, she presses forward. I love the transparency of Chloe and Luke. No, they’re not perfect, but they willingly show themselves to each other. I got a clear picture of them both and was able to understand their flaws. If I had to choose, I would say Luke is my favorite in this story, because he’s willing to take a risk with Chloe. I appreciated his honesty and his patience with her. I cheered for this couple! I won’t spoil the story by trying to explain why there is a mermaid reference in the book's title. Find out for yourself, because it’s really sweet.
