We're Different it is True: 2nd Edition (Illustrations Completely Revised) by Terri Kelley is a colorful, compassionate story book, which introduces a child to the educational as well as emotional concept of differences. The book also helps children cope with physiological and emotional issues pertaining to being unique from others.
Children love to view vibrant colors in their story books and are attracted to pictures that relate to them. The author and illustrator have provided both within the story. Children also love rhyming sentences because they are often easier for children to read and comprehend. The author's entire story is made up of rhyming sentences, making the story more child friendly and fun. Terri Kelley teaches children that uniqueness within a person is not unusual because everyone is different in their own way. For example: Terri explains that although your classmates or friends may look different, what makes them the same as you is the fact that you like each other and are friends, regardless of the other person's appearance.
Not one adult or child in this world is exactly the same as the other, not even twins. We all have differences that make us special and unique. The author teaches us it's not important that something or someone looks different, but that you enjoy it, or enjoy the person's friendship. As the saying goes, "Don't judge a book by its cover." A teacher or parent could use this book as a reference to teach the importance of not judging a person by their looks or different lifestyle, but only on how they make you feel.
