Septimus Brown’s We’ve Come for Your Eggs follows Glimm, a small blue frost dragon familiar serving Jorvun Prattlethorn, a wizard who receives word that Frostvale’s King Trudera may soon name a successor. Jorvun believes he is Trudera’s secret son, so he sets out to cross the magical barrier Frostvale raised after Valorica threatened to annex the North. Glimm has his own goal: reaching the Aerie, the dragon college Jorvun once promised him. Their mission includes Elric Mawkley, who wants his children to see him as heroic; Lark Bombast, a Saltborn pirate, who wants trade restored for her faith; Fox Tattleby, who wants the story; and Xander Bonesmith, who wants northern eggs for his supplement order. The journey keeps swerving from one scheme into strange trouble as Glimm quietly becomes the one most able to save them.

Septimus Brown’s We’ve Come for Your Eggs is a very funny fantasy satire, and Brown does an excellent job of making Glimm’s small-dragon voice ridiculous and oddly heroic. I love that the comedy comes through serious quests treated with total sincerity. Xander Bonesmith’s hunt for northern eggs works so well because his supplement order has become a holy mission, which is exactly the kind of lunacy Brown handles best. Glimm’s time aboard the Shaelun, a trade ship with caged magical creatures in its hold, is just as good, since learning spellcraft gives him the first real proof that he can be more than Jorvun’s familiar. The Frostvale material is also strong, with Jorvun’s secret parentage turning royal succession into comic chaos. Well written and hilarious, readers who enjoy fantasy comedy will adore this.
