In "What Did You Say?" author Monique Hammond describes the frightening and debilitating experience of the onset of an inner ear disorder. While teaching a pharmacology class, she suddenly lost the hearing in her left ear. Later that evening, she had a vicious attack of nausea and vertigo. Ending up in the local emergency room, she was then sent through one testing procedure after another, all without a definitive diagnosis. Eventually, she was most prominently identified with an idiopathic Meniere's Disease diagnosis. A support group helped her to both learn about the disorder and attempt to cope with the sequela of the disease.

This is a highly instructive book that anyone with hearing loss may find useful. The author first deals with the various types of hearing disorders and then speaks about the symptoms which may accompany various types of hearing diseases. She takes the reader through hearing technology devices and assistive listening devices which are currently state-of-the-art aides for the hearing impaired. Lastly, there is a section on surgical implants and the various criteria necessary to be considered for such corrective or supplementary surgery. One of the more personal parts of the book is related to the emotions which surface when one is faced with loss of major adaptive functioning. And then, there is a multitude of checklists and resources for those wanting to know more about hearing losses in general. The author obviously knows a considerable amount about her field of study and from both a personal and professional standpoint, this is an outstanding presentation.
