What Mountains Teach by Michael Herrick is an inspiring story of a man’s journey back to himself. It is a spellbinding story of a man facing a midlife crisis, unable to come to grips with the distance between his wife and himself, and not able to give his children the attention they need. A personal odyssey to the mountains, a place he frequented as a young man, could give him answers. Read on to discover the encounters he makes on the way, what he learns from an Appalachian Trail journal, and how his experiences will bring him home to the bitter and startling truth that he might have loved his wife for someone she isn’t, and how accepting someone for who they are could make a big difference. Can he reignite the flame of love, reconnect with himself and his family, and create meaning in his life?
This is a story that will resonate with many readers. I just turned forty and some of the questions answered in this memorable story are those I have been grappling with for a while now. The author shows a great understanding of midlife psychology, weaving relevant themes such as family, love, solitude, and personal fulfillment into the story. Michael Herrick composes passages that are beautiful and insightful and readers will be entertained by the enlightening dialogues as they follow the protagonist’s story. What Mountains Teach is a great story with strong spiritual overtones, well-crafted in prose that is accessible, and in a voice that is arresting and alluring. I couldn’t put it down.
