Book One in the Kaelandur Series, When Blood Falls, sets the stage for a series set in a time and place "where the gods were gods without question, and men were men without example. Where myths of old were realized and legends born." Set in 1347 CE, in a frozen land, Tyr Og, following the deaths of his mother and sister, has lost the will to live. Filled with rage at the taunts from his fellow tribesmen demeaning his family, his defence of his family's honor ends in the deaths of fellow tribesmen, and he suffers banishment from the community to a place known as the Deep, and here begins the rest of the story.

When Blood Falls opens a new fantasy series by Joshua Robertson in a style reminiscent of the great names in fantasy epics. Beginning with a horrific accident, the tension builds as the main character, Tyr, is banished to the Deep, where demons dwell, and humans are food. Although Tyr is the leading character and fully presented, the supporting characters are also well described and fit within the setting and scenes that provide the stage for this story. Robertson is adept at building suspense while ensuring verisimilitude in a make-believe world, a feat not easily accomplished. The story is fast-paced and captivating in a page-turning way that is often missing from the massive fantasy epics, where the tale is bogged down with unfamiliar languages and a ton of characters hard to track. Excellent writing.
