In The Funniest Picture Book Ever: AKA Fartnado!, Derek Taylor Kent introduces young readers to a weird little town called Ha! Everything there is built around jokes, silliness, and honestly, some pretty bad manners. The town is full of strange characters, like Lonnie B. Lutz, who’s known for having three butts and being really good at farting. The mayor is a horse, there’s a Museum of Farts that celebrates the town’s “founding farters,” and the local orchestra even plays music with farm animals. Life in Ha! is all about humor until a group called the No-Nonsense Crew shows up. They think the town is too ridiculous and plan to wipe it off the map. When bulldozers start rolling in, and things get serious, the people of Ha! realize they’ll have to work together to save their strange little town. But can a town powered by jokes, beans, and outrageous ideas actually stop these people from taking over?
Ridiculous from start to finish, The Funniest Picture Book Ever: AKA Fartnado! knows exactly what it is trying to do: make kids laugh. Derek Taylor Kent's quirky children's book leans heavily into bathroom humor, but it does so in a playful way that younger readers usually find hilarious. The rhymes, word jokes, and strange characters keep the pages moving quickly, and the bright illustrations by Filip Trajkovski add to the chaos. Under all the fart jokes, there is also a simple message about being proud of what makes a community different. The residents of Ha! may be weird, but they stick together when trouble arrives. Some adults might groan at the endless gas jokes, but the author clearly understands his audience. Kids who enjoy silly stories will read this one again and again—and laugh every single time.
