When children walk into a church, they seek belonging and the love of God. Elrena Evans’ book, When I Go to Church, I Belong, depicts this loving atmosphere, particularly for children with special needs. The story begins with the Bible verse Matthew 19:14, in which Jesus invites all children to come to him. The story opens with a young girl who tells of her experience with going to church from the moment she steps out of her car and walks through the church doors. She talks about the exciting things at the church and vividly describes the people around her. As a child with special needs, she also mentions how loud noises can bother her but that there’s a place where she feels safe. Whether the church event involves listening to Jesus' stories or singing, the girl knows that she is always welcome at church and never alone.
At the end of the book, author Elrena Evans expresses her hopes and dreams for When I Go to Church, I Belong. Elrena hopes that this story can be a springboard for conversations about those with disabilities and also inspire others to welcome them as Jesus welcomes them. I wholeheartedly agree that her book is a great starting point to invite others to be aware of children with specific needs. After reading this story, readers will be touched by its message of kindness and be inspired to love. When children ask their parents about people with special needs, this book serves as a fantastic aid in guiding their discussion. The illustrations by Rebecca Evans are lovely and show people from various backgrounds. I felt touched when I read about what it means to feel loved and welcomed. Elrena captures the essence of what a vibrant, welcoming church looks like when filled with the life of Christ. When I Go to Church, I Belong expertly depicts the church as a warm, inviting community of people who are the hands and feet of Jesus on earth.
