When the Moon Was White by Jeff Probst is a novel that pulls you into its world, mixing 1960s America with an old-fashioned London feel. At its core, the book is about ambition and kindness, and how they can sometimes clash. We meet a fun mix of dreamers and outsiders all trying to figure out their place in a changing world. Music is also a big part of the story, almost like a soundtrack running through the pages. As they try to answer the strange core question of 'Can the Moon stay white?', Probst’s writing gives the whole novel a poetic, almost dreamlike quality. The story moves at a steady pace, matching the rhythm of the music it describes, making it feel more like an experience than just a book.
Jeff Probst has a way with words that is beautiful and easy to read, making emotions hit hard without feeling too dramatic. The way he brings music into the story makes it almost feel like you can hear the songs as you read. I liked the idea of chasing success while also staying kind, but he does it in a way that doesn’t feel like he’s lecturing. The setting is also a huge part of what makes this book special—blending 1960s America with a quiet London neighborhood makes it nostalgic but also fresh. Some parts were so well written that I had to stop and read them again, just to take in how vivid they were. At times, it felt like the music in the book was playing, filling the scenes with real emotion. Overall, When the Moon Was White is best enjoyed slowly, maybe with a record playing in the background, and I highly recommend it.
