When You Are Happy, I Am Happy! The Power of Compassion by Jaicy Ramsay tells a tale of Taro Mori. Taro is a well respected Sensei who teaches young people the art of compassion. He believes that changing your heart from being a selfish person into a generous person is the best way to achieve true happiness. Although we are a competitive people by nature, this book suggests that we can learn compassion and true happiness by helping others and wanting the best for all people, not just ourselves. However, when Taro tries to teach future generations these lessons, he is faced with many obstacles and opposition. He must determine the best way to teach the next generation his ideas of happiness and compassion to leave behind the right legacy.
Although this book is listed as non-fiction, I thought it read like a story and I appreciated that aspect of it. It was very thought provoking and readers will appreciate the questions about happiness and compassion this story asks us to consider. Anyone interested in Kung Fu or meditation, becoming a simpler person, or living in the now will appreciate the ideals taught here. It is definitely a story that continues on in my thoughts long after I have put down the pages and readers will appreciate that if they are interested in a book that makes them think about they way they live life and how they can implement changes to make it better.
