If given the choice, do money and success outweigh love? Roxanne D. Howard eloquently presents these options in When You Close Your Eyes. Lark is engaged to Charles but keeps having lucid sex dreams of a mysterious man with an Irish accent. She receives a phone call in the middle of a multimillion-dollar business meeting, informing her of her estranged father's death. Flying from London to Oregon, Lark is forced to face the reality of a dark secret being brought to light. When she arrives in Oregon, Lark meets Niall, the attorney in charge of distributing the estate. She immediately feels an amazing attraction to the Irish attorney that has become an important family friend. Charles finally arrives in Oregon and urges Lark to return to London with him. The story deepens as Charles and Niall both try to win Lark over. Does she choose Charles, her fiancé of 6 years, or Niall, her new-found friend that stars in her dreams at night?
Roxanne D. Howard's ability to engage my mind is a quality I appreciate. I expected When You Close Your Eyes to be a typical romance novel but discovered a story filled with conflict, disappointment, and self-discovery. The characters are well-developed, and the inner turmoil that Lark feels is easily envisioned. The pace of the story with various twists makes this an easy read. I would recommend adult readers that enjoy an action-filled romance novel to pick a copy of this 5-star book up. There are explicit scenes but they aren't distasteful in any way. I found myself wanting to tell Lark to ditch Charles for Niall. Who will you want her to pick?
