What if you couldn’t speak, but you had a powerful voice within you that wanted to express the wonders, joys, sorrows, and frustrations of life? In Joshua Thomas’ Whispers of Hope and Wonder, a young teenager speaks out through the written word, through poetry. “If pride comes before a fall/ then wisdom will break the impact.” The poet’s voice speaks loudly for all to hear, expressing the powerful emotions we all feel from time to time. As he points out, “I have a voice./ Trapped in the wilderness, fighting to be free.” Freedom is an elusive emotion, one that grapples with all that life has to offer.
Joshua Thomas’ book, Whispers of Hope and Wonder: Poetry for Teens and Young Readers, is a tribute to a young man who has found his inner voice calling and wants to express himself in the best (and only) way possible for him. Using multiple forms of poetry, from free verse to rhyming stanzas, this poet has a lot to say, and his words are poignant, powerful, and creatively thoughtful. The poet is lyrical in his praise, expressing gratitude for family, music, and the sea. He also speaks about grief, sadness, loneliness, and all those emotions that weigh us down, but he has a powerful will to keep going, and this, too, is evident in his words. The poet speaks loudly in the quiet moments, when one might miss the smallest of details, but he misses nothing. The quiet rhythms of the sea encourage him to pay attention to every little detail, which he does, and he writes about it. This is an exemplary collection of thought-provoking poems that speak not only to young people but also to people of all ages.
