“Who Lives in the Sea?: Ocean Animals of Hawaii,” written by Monika Mira, is a beautiful children’s story that will be read and enjoyed over and over. Baby asked Mommy who lives in the sea in Hawaii and she replied that a little rock crab lives there. Then Baby asked the crab who lives there, and the crab answered that a shrimp lives there. This continues with Baby asking each animal who lives in the sea in Hawaii until the jellyfish asks if Baby can remember all of the animals that he was told live there.
This is a really cute book for children as it is filled with realistic illustrations of each ocean animal. The illustrations are very soothing to look at as well. This book is written in the style of the classic “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?” book and the repetition is great for young readers. I like the emotions that are included in this book as well. Each ocean animal responds with emotion. For example, the seal replies joyously, while the eel replies secretively and the starfish replies timidly. This leads to a great discussion about the emotions that are listed as you can discuss why the animal may be feeling and responding the way that it is, and also how a person sounds and looks when he or she is feeling that emotion. This also allows for the book to be read with emotion as well. This is a great book that has the potential of being an instant favorite and children’s classic!
