Why, Oh Why, Am I a Crocodile? is a children’s picture book about a crocodile learning to love herself. Alex Brooks takes us through the forest as the sad crocodile envies the parrot’s brilliant colors, the giraffe’s long legs, the lion’s great roar, and the swanky snake. At her lowest point, she meets a friendly monkey, who teaches her that looks aren’t everything and that we should love ourselves the way we are. Crocodile learns two valuable lessons that day: love yourself and the best type of problem is one halved and shared. Hannah Worsley illustrates the lovely and encouraging messages of body positivity, self-esteem, and friendship.

In today’s internet culture of being faced with staged pictures and Instagram filters, it could be difficult for young children to see themselves as beautiful. Alex Brooks tackled this problem thoughtfully by writing a wonderful rhyming book that encourages self-love. She touches on a few topics in Why, Oh Why, Am I a Crocodile? including self-esteem, mental health issues, disability, as well as friendship. Hannah Worsley illustrates the picturesque forest and savanna where Crocodile meets her future friends. The animals are expressive and inviting and the little background scenes and characters add a humorous effect to the book. As someone who struggled with self-esteem problems growing up, a book like this would have been invaluable during my childhood, and will surely help shape any child into a confident and loving adult. The book is a must-read for any child growing up as it’s never too early to teach children to love themselves just the way they are.
